High Speed Confusion - Broadband

by Alan Marston

Its consumer crazy time again, but also a time of celebration. The alchemy
of life comes to the fore as years end so best wishes for the pursuit of
life's gold. I'll try to provide some missing ingredients to make the
transformations and transmutations easier than they might otherwise be in
the age of confusion... at least in respect of DSL internet connectivity.

DSL - Jetstream - High Speed, Broadband...

Whatever you want to call it (and its called DSL in most countries),
please be sure, PlaNet has it and if you are an existing PlaNeteer you can
change to `high speed' connection at a discounted rate.

Yes, sure, Telecom and its `embedded' clients like Orcon are promoting
their Jetstream offers like there's no tomorrow, but of course there is a
tomorrow and a day after tomorrow. The climate created by Telecom is
confusing, unsure and tending to promote panic. Don't panic! It's security
and support that really count in this ephemeral world, PlaNet has been
doing Internet since 1992, and intends continuing to supply the same solid
service in the 21st Century, in particular in this instance, higher speed
(than modem) internet connectivity.

Information is power and control.

1. If you are using Jetstart, you can continue to use it, at the price you
are paying now, for as long as you want: Jetstart does not stop working on
31 Dec04. Jetstart works for you?... then stick with it, no need to make
any change at all.

2. PlaNet offers all and every broadband service any other provider does,
and more in the case of all but the biggest. See
http://pl.net/dslrates.html (no www on that address).

3. There is no `churn fee' for existing PlaNet users when swapping
broadband (or any other) service, both now and for forseeable future, even
if you are using Telecom's Jetstream services and want to swap to PlaNet.
The whole churn fee concept is up in the air and won't land soon, again,
no need join the Christmas rush and regret.

4. You have as much time as you like to get broadband with PlaNet, we
don't need to offer special `no connection fee' offers, because we never
have a connection fee anyway.

Until Telecom finally provision the new agreement in reality (the latest
stated date is early Dec04) you can, if feeling some urgency, get all the
plans by temporarily using Telecom as data supplier, app. form and rates
linked from http://pl.net/dslrates.html  Again, there will be no churn fee
for your swap back to PlaNet on our commissioning the new wholesale
agreement.

5. PlaNet was built on the foundation of dataspeed, ie. we do not oversell
our data capacity and undercut service quality for short-term profit. In
the era of boredband, dataspeed is THE essential ingredient, so basing
decisions purely on price is never more counterproductive. PlaNet always
has, does now and will continue to supply enough data capacity so that
what you buy and pay for is what you get. Buy 256k, get 256k.

6. The new services being promoted as Go for residential phone accounts
and Venture for business lines are a Jetstart, with one technical
difference, it
is 256k download instead of 128k. There is also one important
administrative difference, PlaNet is now on a wholesale agreement with
Telecom, we supply
services to you and manage them in their entirety, you do not get a bill
from Telecom anymore, ie. one bill from us and all the support you need -
we
supply.

Therein lies the real change, you deal directly and only with PlaNet for
all your Internet services. This means PlaNet can now negotiate with you
right down the line, no `I'll just OK that with ....' Deal direct with the
owners.

We hope you orbit around a solid PlaNet and don't get lost in space by
being fuelled with media-generated hype and panic into a search for
virtual services which have no gravity. If you have rushed into a
Jetstream or Go or Venture or whatever with some other ISP you can swap
back to PlaNet after mid Dec04 at no transfer cost.

A data pipe by any other name

Telecom (which includes its 100% owned company Xtra) Started with Jetstart
and then re-named it Jetstream Starter and then Jetstream Surf and now
call it Go, Explorer and Plus for residential, which is in order 1Gig,
3Gig and 10Gig included data. The only change is from 128k down to 256k,
which is a good thing of course.

PlaNet has to use its own names, so we keep it simple: Flat1 ($35/month),
Flat5 ($45/month) and Flatout ($54/month) corresponding to the amounts of
included data or unlimited in case of Flatout

Telecom/Xtra's Jetstream Venture (for business lines) we do not
distinguish from residential, same Flat accounts and prices apply.

The Flat plans are a DSL 256k down 128k up DSL connection, formerly called
Jetstart, which was 128k/128k
