I Am Not An Animal!
By Alan Marston, 4 September, 2007

Having escaped both the blackboard and concrete jungles in pursuit of the
full-time job Sanity Maintenance Engineer for Upper Waiwera and living
onsite in its real jungle of native trees I have had occasion to re-view
the Amer/Euro-centered library of moving-pictures, music and philosophy.
And what an engaging activity that is, that is until and unless I view the
post-post-modern section, which sucks man!

Whatever the reason, not to be confused with reasoning, film, music and
ideas makers since 1989 have produced materials that appeal to people of
any age... as long as they are childish. Which means The Axiom has been
for nearly 20 years: for just ten bucks you can be reassured that if you
restrict yourself to the cheap off-the-shelf philosophy portrayed in this
film/music/book no matter how childish you are you can remain so and still
make your life a success. Where success is framed as the chance of winning
a happiness and fulfillment prize lusted after by the core of
post-post-modern human being which is the high status, trophies and sexual
pull of top shelf consumer. In short, life is a lottery and all one can do
is buy one's ticket here.

If you are older than 40 you may recall the last remnants of a society
where there was more to life than being a good consumer and the films,
music, literature and etc of what was then called art, before art like
everything else = commerce. If so then as a sanity maintenance engineer I
recommend you may like to avail yourself of the following art-forms.

Movies: Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Catch-22,
Laurence Of Arabia, Knife In The Water, Easy Rider, Woodstock, Chinatown,
Barry Lyndon, A Short Film About Killing, Spartacus, Three Colours Blue...

Musicians: Nina Simone, John Lennon, Van Morrison, Charlie Parker, Count
Basie, (early) Louis Armstrong, Billy Holiday, (early) Bob Dylan... only
Van Morrison is still saying I am still not a consumer!

Philosophers: Georg W. F. Hegel, Søren Kierkegaard.

Call of protest: Replace Spartacus' I am not an animal with I Am Not A
Consumer!
