Anti-GE Camp Wellington

About 70 protesters have set up a makeshift canvas encampment of about 30
tents outside Parliament to protest against genetic engineering (GE) in New
Zealand.

Campaign spokesman George Darroch said protesters from Nelson to Auckland
had come to Wellington for the protest, set to last until the GE moratorium
is lifted on Wednesday.

While he realised it was too late to force a change of heart on the
moratorium, the protest was a way of signalling to the Government that they
had not given up the fight, Mr Darroch said. "We are here to say this is
not over. It's a turning point that marks the end of one phase and the
beginning of another."

Protesters were advocating a "people's moratorium" -- encouraging the
public to boycott genetically modified organisms.
