STEM Motorway Growth
Stop the Eastern Motorway group meeting on: Tuesday 31st July
at 7.30pm, Jubilee Building, 545 Parnell Road, Parnell.
This
is a vital meeting - the pressure is on from the roading lobby/Chamber
of Commerce etc to push this one through - they have already
achieved a review from Auckland City Council - ANOTHER costly
study. There will also be a key speaker Dr Paul Mees.
"Paul
is a lecturer in transport planning at the University of Melbourne
and has recently published a book called 'A Very Public Solution:
Transport in the dispersed city'. The book demonstrates convincingly
that 'dispersed' American-style cities like those in Canada,
Australia and NZ can have effective high-patronage public transport
systems that compete with the car, so long as they provide an
integrated high-frequency service.
Paul
is also president of the Victorian Public Transport Users Association,
and has been sued by Melbourne's private tollway operators.
The PTUA also campaigns against the construction of freeways
in favor of public transport..
