End Sow Crates

You are invited to a public meeting
at7.30 p.m. on Wednesday Nov 28 at the Grey Lynn Library Hall, 474
Gt North Road, Grey Lynn.
The meeting is being held to discuss an
important animal welfare issue - the fact that 20,000 sows are kept in
cages or sow crates for months on end in pig farms around New Zealand.
The Green Party is organizing this meeting in partnership with the SPCA
as part of a nationwide campaign to ban the sow crate from New Zealand.
The campaign coincides with a six week public consultation on the animal
welfare code for pigs, which is being reviewed by the National Animal
Welfare Advisory Committee. At the end of the review, a recommendation
will be made to the Minister of Agriculture on whether or not to ban the
sow crate.
Sue Kedgley will be speaking at the
meeting along with Hans Kreik, from the SPCA, and Glen Real, from Save
Animals From Exploitation.
The public review provides a one off
opportunity to get rid of the sow crate, which is in many people's
opinion a form of animal abuse. Only public pressure will achieve
this.
