C ISOCNZ 2000 Talks About ICANN and DNS, Ecommerce If you are unfamiliar with those terms, probably not advisable to attend the second National Summit organised by ISOCNZ on Internet governance policies. If you are familiar with the terms then you need to know that the Summit will take place in Wellington on 23 June 2000. Your attendance at the Summit is vital to ensure that you, as a New Zealand Internet user, have a say in the future of the Internet in our country. It offers an opportunity for consultation on a range of issues which have the potential to have an impact on our economy, the way we do business on the Internet, and the future development of Ecommerce and the Knowledge Economy.

The first Summit took place just over a year ago and discussed the establishment of ICANN and consequent changes to the way the Internet is governed. It enabled the New Zealand delegation to make representations to ICANN on a variety of issues including compulsory Trade Mark arbitration processes and Registrar Accreditation guidelines. Since then a number of new issues have arisen where consultation is essential. The timing for the Summit is in advance of the next ICANN meeting which will take place in Yokohama in July. Issues of importance to be discussed at the Yokohama meeting include the relationship between ccTLDs, ICANN and the role of governments in ccTLD administration; and the creation of new generic TLDs: the process for establishing them, risks and benefits, and the protection of trademark holders and famous names. Full background material will be on ISOCNZ web-site http://www.isocnz.org.nz/later next week (by Friday 9 June).

We are aiming for representation at the Summit from as wide a cross-section of the New Zealand community as possible: Internet Industry, Business, Internet Users, Government, Academia, NGO's etc. NATIONAL INTERNET SUMMIT June 23rd Venue: Air New Zealand Suite, 2nd Floor, Wellington Town Hall, 111 Wakefield Street, WELLINGTON Thank you for giving your time to this important issue.
