Greenpeace Incinerator Stoppers Charged

June 17 Auckland

Three Greenpeace activists were arrested and charged with trespass and
unlawfully being upon a building after shutting down the Waste Resources
Limited’s Auckland waste incinerator early this morning. The three
activists scaled the chimney and placed a cap on the stack to prevent
the incinerator from firing up, before locking themselves to the
chimney. They will appear in court and are expected to be released later
today.

Greenpeace joined 126 community groups and environmental organisations
spanning 54 countries today, to call on governments and industry to stop
burning waste. Waste incineration releases dioxin, one of the most toxic
chemicals known. The Waste Resources incinerator has been breaching its
resource consent for dioxin pollution for the last two years. There is
no safe level of dioxin. Greenpeace wants the Government to ban
incineration, and Waste Resources Limited to change to clean
alternative methods of treating waste.
