Posted on 28-4-08 GST-off-food Petition Takes Off
28 April 2008
The price of basic food items has soared 28% over the last year, reports
the Weekend Herald. Have our wages or super risen 28% during the same
period? No, nothing like it.
RAM's petition to "remove GST tax from all our food" was launched two
weeksago. The petition has taken off like a rocket, gaining more than
2,000 signatures already at RAM stalls.
Many signatories are telling RAM they need the 12.5% GST to come off food
so they can make ends meet. One person in Mangere said a tax on food is
"like putting a tax on breathing".
Our petition can be obtained by email request to
friends and workmates? If you are a member of Greypower, a church, a
union, a sports club, etc, could you ask its leaders to circulate our
petition among their membership?
By working together, we could collect 50,000 or more signatures by
October. That's when the election campaign will be hotting up, and RAM
will present the petition to MPs from all parties.
We can make the removal of GST from food a big election issue. That will
put huge pressure on the politicians, who know they could lose many votes
if they turn their back on us.
